Adult Training

Adult volunteers bring important knowledge and life skills with them. We provide training programs that enable adult volunteers to apply their experience to their role in Girl Scouting, learn the methods and materials special to Girl Scouting, and expand their own abilities in ways personally useful in the job market. You must register before you can attend a training session.

Some helpful hints:

  • Deadline for registration is generally two weeks prior to the session or as noted.
  • Register early to avoid disappointment
  • Minimum course size is ten unless otherwise noted. If minimum is not reached by registration deadline, course may be canceled and you will be notified by telephone or email. Every effort will be made to place registrants in another course.
  • Registrations received less than two weeks before an event are not eligible for refunds.
  • Please do not bring children to training sessions unless child care arrangements are specifically mentioned for that course. We encourage you to ask other parents to baby-sit as a service to the troop.
  • Check the website or call the council office at the numbers below for cancellations due to weather.

Course Descriptions and dates

Advanced Trips
For troops planning to take big trips (more than three nights) which require long-term planning and, in most cases, extra troop fundraising events. GSUSA has prepared a four-part kit called the Global Travel Tool Kit which covers all the topics and provides worksheets, timelines and a travel journal. We'll review the tool kit and also present a panel of leaders who have taken successful trips in the US and abroad. This workshop is required for trips of three or more nights and the training date is required on the Intent-to-Travel form. Formerly open to both leaders and girls, this year's workshop is for ADULTS ONLY. Age Level Change - Daisy to Brownie
For Daisy troop leaders who are moving to Brownies. This course provides an introduction to the Journey books and other program activities. Participants will go over requirements, program and troop/group governance. Prerequisite: New Leader Training, Parts A & B. Please bring the Brownie Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting to the training.

Backpacking 201
This hands-on training is to teach backpacking (hiking to a backpacking location with all your gear on your back and then camp out). Volunteers will learn about "leave no trace" camping principles, how to cook on a backpacking stove, water purification techniques, food safety and storage, sanitation basics, selection of a three-point camp site and experience carrying a 25-35 pound pack on a two-mile hike. Training is for adults and Ambassadors with accompanying adult. The $50.00 fee covers classroom sessions, manual and site rental and food for the overnight.

Pre-requisites: Physically fit to carry a 25-35 pound pack for two miles. Training: GSSNE Outdoor Day, GSSNE Troop Camp Training, GSSNE CIT 1, VIT 1, Hiking series or equivalent.
Recommended: GSSNE Cooking on the Fly workshop and First Aid/CPR.

"I Can Code" Training

“I Can Code” badge training. Code.org is offering Girl Scout leaders six hours of free training and certification in addition to classroom supplies and curriculum materials.

Saturday, April 23, 2016, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm,GSSNE Council Office, 500 Greenwich ave, RI 02886.

Requirements: Only one leader per troop may register for the workshop. Please bring a lunch and a laptop computer (if leaders do not have personal laptops, please contact Charlotte Markey, cmarkey@gssne.org and one will be provided for the training).

During the course leaders will:

  • Learn computer science concepts and computational thinking patterns through “unplugged” and “online” activities including computer programing and coding and how to share this information with girl scouts.
  • Practice computer science mini-lessons that engage girls.
  • Learn how to best communicate computer science themes of programming, algorithms, events, loops, computing practice and global and ethical impacts.
  • Help their scouts earn computer badges.

First Aid/CPR

Certification in First Aid/CPR is required for at least one adult accompanying troops/groups on trips or overnight outings; it is recommended for all other troop activities. The GSSNE course offers a two-year certification from the American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI). ASHI training has two parts:  online training and a practicum session. Registration closes two full weeks before the scheduled course date to allow enough time for volunteers to complete the online portion of the training. After registration, volunteers will be sent an email by ASHI with a link to the online training segment. The online training is comprehensive; be sure and allow enough time to complete it. You must complete the online training and print off a “Certificate of Completion” before attending a practicum session.  Practicum sessions will be two-hours long and involve working on manikins. The fee for the course is $45.00; once you have entered the online site, no refunds will be made. To hold the course, GSSNE requires a minimum registration of 4 and a maximum of 10 people.

Go for Gold/Strive for Silver
This workshop focuses on the current requirements for the Gold and Silver Awards. Please note that girls, their parents, and adult leaders may register for this workshop. When registering, please indicate whether you are pursuing the Gold Award or Silver Award.

GSSNE Museum Docent Training
Interested in Girl Scout history? Know nothing? Know a lot? Either way, why not volunteer to become a docent for the Girl Scout Museum at Camp Hoffman? You'll pass on local, camp and national Girl Scout history through the memorabilia displayed at the museum. This is an occasional volunteer position, usually requiring about 1 1/2 hours of your time, 1-3 times a year, for your service unit or at council events and open houses. Trained docents can help troops earn the Sarah Hazard Nomber Museum Patch by providing scripted tours during camping weekends or whenever you are available. Training is encouraged for Rangers, Camping and Program Coordinators and SUMs. Troop adults and Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts, when accompanied by a registered adult, may also register for docent training.

Low Ropes Training
Learn games and strategies to become a trained facilitator for the low ropes course at Camp Hoffman. You'll learn about the Whale Watch, Mohawk Walk, Triangle Traverse, and Spider's Web. The training is free and we ask that you donate at least 3 days of your time in the next year to introduce the course to girls, including the ones in your own troop. No experience necessary. This training is the first step to full challenge course certification and must be passed in order to participate in the High Ropes Training. New Leader Training

New Leader Training consists of the following parts:

Part A: The Basics, online training from the websites of Girl Scouts of the USA and Girl Scouts of Southeastern New England. To receive instructions about how to access and report these trainings, please contact the GSSNE office.


Part B
: Organizing Your Troop, a three-hour, face-to-face workshop on how to get started as a Girl Scout volunteer and how to organize troop activities.

Part C: Outdoor Day
Training is a six-hour course that introduces new leaders to a GSSNE camp and shows you how to prepare girls for a daytime outing at one of the GSSNE camps. Sessions are scheduled from April to October. Please dress for camp - wear sneakers and outdoor clothing. This is a rain or shine event; wear rain gear if required. In addition, please bring the following:

  • Lunch, water or drinks and a can of chicken-based soup to make Friendship Soup
  • A mess kit (or plastic dishes) and a mesh "dunk" bag
  • Bug spray and sunscreen
  • $1.50 to cover the cost of s'mores

Note: Outdoor Day Training is a pre-requisite for Troop Camp Training, which prepares volunteers to take a troop overnight camping. Leaders may sometimes combine Outdoor Day Training and Troop Camp Training (see next entry).

Program Aide for Adults
GSSNE has revised the Program Aide training. To complete the Program Aide Training, girls will participate in the Core Training with an additional specialty training in one of seven topic areas (STEAM, Life Skills, Making a Difference, Travel/Adventure, Camping/Outdoors, Global Citizenship, and Girl Scout History/Tradition). This training prepares girls to work with younger scouts in a troop setting. Seventh and eighth grade Cadette Scouts may take the training which is offered by the council several times a year (check the program brochure), or leaders of Cadette troops may take this course and train their troops at their own pace. This session will prepare you to deliver the general curriculum and we will also review the specialty options. Troop Camp Training
This training provides adults with the basic knowledge, skills, methods and techniques to enable troops to have a successful troop camp experience. Completion of this course will qualify an adult to take a troop lodge, cabin or platform tent camping. Attendance at all sessions (classroom and overnight) of each course is mandatory for completion. The course consists of 5-6 hours of classroom work plus a hands-on training overnight from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon. Cost: $25. Prerequisite: New Leader Training, Parts A & B, and/or Outdoor Day.

Note: Trainers have the option of including the Outdoor Day training as part of Troop Camp Training or they may opt to have Outdoor Training be a pre-requisite for the Troop Camp Training session. Please read the titles of the courses carefully in order to determine which type of training it is.

Ranger Training
Volunteers who complete this training will be eligible to spend weekends at Camp Hoffman as Rangers, people who are on-call to answer questions and help troops and groups using the facilities. This training is limited to adults who have completed Troop Camp Training.

Train the Trainer
This course is for experienced leaders who would like to train other leaders in New Leader Training, Troop Trips II and outdoor trainings. To be eligible, you must be recommended by your local SUM and approved by the council staff. Council trainers commit to a minimum of one training a year and attendance at the twice yearly Trainer's Conference.

Troop Refresher Course

This course is for leaders who completed Troop Camp Training Prior to 2005 or for leaders who were certified by another Girl Scout Council. It covers the polices and procedures of GSSNE and contains updates on training fundamentals. This Course Consits of one classroom session; there is no outdoor practicum. Once completed, leader may take girls troop camping.

Troop Trips II
This training is required for all leaders planning trips of more than 100 miles from their communities and/or overnight trips (including museum overnights). This course is not required for overnight camping trips at GSSNE camps because leaders receive a full training at the Troop/Group Camp Training session.

Wilderness First Aid
To take a troop on a hike, a backpacking trip or to an off-trail camping site which is more than 30 minutes from 911, GSUSA requires one adult on the trip must be Wilderness First Aid trained. ASHI (the American Health and Safety Institute is the certifying organization) has a 16 hour comprehensive course which covers a wide range of rescue scenarios. The course will be taught over a weekend at a GSSNE campl the fee covers meals, training materials and manuals. Certification is for two years. Pre-requisite: current certification in First Aid/CPR. The fee for the course is $100.00. To hold the course, GSSNE requires a minimum registration of 4.
